Remington 783 Magazine Fitment: Short, Long & Magnum Action

The Remington Model 783 is sold across three different action lengths — short action, long action, and magnum long action — and each one takes a different magazine. Action length is everything on a 783

Unlike Marlin's rimfire lineup, the 783 doesn't have model-number variants — it's one rifle sold in different chamberings, and the receiver, magazine well, and magazine body all scale to the cartridge. A short-action magazine will not fit a long-action 783, a long-action magazine will not fit a magnum, and none of them are interchangeable in the other direction. The caliber is stamped on the barrel near the receiver — check it before ordering, and if you're not certain, send us the exact caliber marking and we'll confirm the magazine.

All four of these are short-action bodies, but they are not one universal magazine — the .223/.222 magazine and the .22-250 magazine are caliber-specific and sized differently from the .308-family magazine, so match your exact caliber, not just "short action."

The magnum body is the longest of the three 783 magazine families and holds fewer rounds — 3 versus 4 in the standard long action — because the cartridge itself is longer. It is not interchangeable with the standard long-action magazine even though both are "long action" in name; the magnum body is a distinct, longer part.

The .450 Bushmaster round is wide, straight-walled, and built on a different case than the other 783 chamberings, so it uses its own dedicated 3-round magazine — it does not share a body with the short-action, long-action, or magnum magazines above.

Why action length, not model number

Marlin rimfire rifles are identified by a model number stamped on the barrel. The Remington 783 is identified by its caliber, because Remington built one receiver platform in multiple action lengths rather than issuing separate model numbers for each chambering. That's why every fitment question on this page starts with "what caliber is your 783 chambered in," not "what's the model number." If your 783 is a rebadged or store-brand rifle and the caliber stamp is worn, contact us with a photo of the barrel markings before you order.

Since the short-action, long-action, and magnum bodies are all different parts, the spare has to match your specific caliber — there's no universal 783 backup magazine. Extended-capacity and your state's law

The 8-round XT short-action magazine holds more rounds than the standard 4-round short-action magazine. Magazine capacity limits vary by state, and a few states cap centerfire rifle magazines as well as rimfire ones. Choosing 4-round versus 8-round on a short action

If your 783 is chambered in .308 Winchester, .243 Winchester, or 6.5 Creedmoor, you have a real choice between the standard 4-round magazine and the 8-round XT version. The 4-round matches the original factory configuration and keeps the rifle's profile low and light in a blind or a pack. The 8-round XT trades a bit of that compactness for fewer reloads at the range or on a hunt where a longer string of shots matters. Both are factory-pattern magazines built for the same short-action body — the choice comes down to how you shoot, not fitment.

What magazine fits a Remington 783 in .308 Winchester?

No. The 7mm Rem Mag is a magnum cartridge and uses the dedicated 3-round magnum long action magazine, which is a longer body than the standard 4-round long-action magazine that fits the .30-06.

What magazine fits a Remington 783 in .223 Remington?

The 783 .223/.222 short action magazine, a 5-round magazine built specifically for that caliber — it is not the same part as the .308-family short-action magazine.

Can I use the long-action magazine in a short-action 783, or the reverse?

No. The magazine bodies are different lengths to match the cartridge overall length for each action. A long-action magazine won't seat correctly in a short-action rifle, and a short-action magazine won't hold long-action cartridges.
