Remington built the 783 in three different action lengths — short action, long action, and magnum long action — and the magazine has to match the action. A short-action 783 has a shorter receiver and bolt throw, sized for compact cartridges such as .308 Winchester, .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .223 Remington. A long-action 783 has a longer bolt throw to chamber longer cartridges like .30-06 Springfield, .270 Winchester, .25-06 Remington, and .35 Whelen. The magnum long action is a separate, longer magazine body again, built for magnum cartridges such as 7mm Remington Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum.
