Short action vs. long action vs. magnum
Remington built the 783 in three different action lengths — short action, long action, and magnum long action — and the magazine has to match the action. A short-action 783 has a shorter receiver and bolt throw, sized for compact cartridges such as .308 Winchester, .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .223 Remington. A long-action 783 has a longer bolt throw to chamber longer cartridges like .30-06 Springfield, .270 Winchester, .25-06 Remington, and .35 Whelen. The magnum long action is a separate, longer magazine body again, built for magnum cartridges such as 7mm Remington Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum. None of these three are interchangeable with each other, and the 450 Bushmaster chambering uses its own dedicated magazine as well. A 7mm Rem Mag or .300 Win Mag rifle needs this dedicated 3-round magnum magazine — it will not run in the standard long-action or short-action magazine wells.

Installation and care
Insert the magazine into the magazine well and seat it until it clicks into place — don't force it. To keep it feeding reliably, wipe the body, follower, and feed lips clean of grit and powder residue after range trips, and avoid heavy oil inside the magazine, since it attracts debris. If feeding ever gets rough, clean the feed lips and follower first, confirm the follower moves freely, and check for a weak or kinked spring. Modern magazine springs are designed to be kept under load, so storing this magazine loaded will not wear out the spring — what causes wear is repeated loading and unloading.
